With regard to Rock Doves and "ancestral" habitat, I have been looking
for peregrines and Prairie Falcons for about 40 years, mostly in
California, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado. I have seen apparently
nesting Rock Doves at many cliff sites over that time. When peregrines
were down I used to ascribe the presence of numbers of Rock Doves to the
absence of falcons, but that might not hold up -yet another romantic
idea. But I don't remember seeing both species breeding at the same
site. In any case, I don't think there is any doubt that pigeons have
"naturalized" beyond the cities.
