Scott:
The WOS meeting in Spokane last June had a field trip up to Big Meadow Lake
on June 16. We were supposed to go to Mt. Salmo but the roads were bad (?).
We stopped at Sacheen Lake and Camp Spaudling (sp?) both on hwy 211 on
the way up to Big Meadow. These were great stops for flycatchers, warblers
and vireos. We heard and sometime saw Pacific-sloped, Willow and Hammond's
Flycatchers; American Redstarts, Yellow-rumped, Magnolia, Orange-crowned
Warblers and Red-eyed Vireos. We also heard Veery, Swainson's Thrush and
Gray Catbirds. Red-necked Grebes were nesting on Sacheen Lake. We also
stopped at Cusick to see Bobolink in the grass fields. There were hundreds
of Osprey on the Pend Oreille River nesting on the old pilings. Big Meadow
Lake had singing Northern Waterthrush, Ringed-necked Duck, Common Goldeneye,
and Common Merganser. The walk around the lake was great (moose and calf in
marsh). Lots of mountain birds too (Mountain and Black-capped Chickadee,
Red-naped Sapsucker,Willow Flycatcher, Ruby and Golden-crowned
Kinglet,Orange-crowned,Townsend, and Yellow-rumped Warblers, Solitary and
Warbling Vireos, Gray Jay). We got a Turkey Vulture up there as well.
Have fun,
