I am surprised at the low numbers of dowitchers and WEstern Sandpipers that
you observed. In Tofino, on Saturday, probably 1-2 days flight farther
north, I had a conservative 850 dowitchers and 250 Western Sandpipers.
Perhaps more birds have moved through in less concentration so far this year.
It will be interesting to see what happens next weekend. Usually by the
last weekend in April one might find 10-15 000 shorebirds in Tofino (mostly
dowitchers and Western sandpipers) Maybe these birds are still in the San
Francisco Bay area, and if so, they are only 4 days away.
