Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Alert. This recording
was made Thursday April 25. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls at
233-3976.

The BARRED OWL continues to be seen in Reed College Canyon in southeast
Portland.

The shorebird and goose movements have been conspicuous during the week.
Among the swarm at the flooded shorebird flats at the South Jetty of the
Columbia River immediately following the April 23 storm were RED KNOTS, RED
PHALAROPES, some in breeding plumage, RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, a COMMON TERN,
and several BONAPARTE'S GULLS. RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were also reported in
the Willamette Valley from Phiomath and Creswell. WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were
found in many areas.

HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHERS, PACIFIC SLOPE FLYCATCHERS, and WESTERN WOOD-PEWEES
were as far north as the Portland area during the week. On April 20 a
SWAINSON'S THRUSH and several HERMIT THRUSHES were at Mt. Tabor Park in
Portland. VAUX'S SWIFTS swarmed over the state by April 14.

A male MANDARIN DUCK was observed courting a possible female MANDARIN on
the Tualitan River near the Forest Grove Ponds April 22. Another male
MANDARIN was accompanying a female WOOD DUCK with three chicks at the south
end of Oswego Lake April 22.

A GREAT EGRET has remained through the spring at Coffee Creek Marsh near
Wilsonville. A CASPIAN TERN, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, and a SEMIPALMATED
PLOVER were at Baskett Slough NWR near Salem during the week. Another
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER was near Canby April 24.

A NASHVILLE WARBLER was at Amazon Park in Eugene April 17 and a WILSON'S
WARBLER was at Creswell April 19. A MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER was among a
swarm of migrants on Skinners Butte near Eugene April 24. Skinners Butte is
perhaps the best spot to watch spring migrants in the entire Willamette
Valley.

There have been many ORANGE-CROWNED and YELLOW-RUMPEDS, and a few
BLACK-THROATED GRAYS and other warblers but the warbler movement has been
slow. Perhaps because of the lousy weather.

Thats it for this week.
