Interestingly, and I didn't know this until recently, birds are not immune
from rabies. They can become infected and can pass the virus to other
animals. Fortunately for rehabbers (not so fortunately for the birds) the
ones that are bitten by rapid animals are usually eaten or killed so the
virus goes no further.
