San Juan Island on Saturday was wonderful. Barb and John Jensen led the
field trip for the day and we got to see everything promised and alot of
extra stuff. It was sunny and calm all day so it was great for the ocean
viewing. Black Oystercatchers were easy to see on the offshore rocks at
Pear Point and at the SanJuan County Park. We saw wild Turkeys off Argyle
Road (Benson Lane I think). At the visitor center at American Camp the fir
trees were full off Pine Siskins and Red Crossbills. We got to see a Red
Crossbill nest nest thanks to Lee Barnes. Orange-crowned and Yellow-rumped
Warblers were singing and the Bald Eagles were on their nest there as well.
Skylarks were doing their thing at American Camp in the grass fields on
South Beach Road along with a female Red Fox and her young and a billion
rabbits. A Golden Eagle was soaring over False Bay. It landed on a snag on
Bailer Hill Road so we had great looks. A real non-bird highlight was the
Killer Whale pod at San Juan County Park. All in all a great day!
