I saw my first Western Tanager of the year this morning. It appeared
suddenly in a hazel growing in my yard. I had been watching a Dark-eyed
Junco sitting quietly on a branch, and listening to my resident
White-crowned Sparrow singing when there was a sudden flash of color. I
watched it for five minutes or more as it moved from tree to tree.

Since I haven't been able to pay attention to much detail on Tweeters in
recent months, I'm not sure if tanagers have been around for a while this
year or if this is early. I'd appreciate knowing.

Tomorrow I fly to Houston. I'll stay a couple of days in Galveston first
then in Houston. I hope to visit High Island, among other places.
