I was not fortunate enough to have met this man, but my brother-in-law in
Albuquerque was privileged to lead Roger and his wife on a tour of the Bosque
Del Apache NWR. Roger's wife related this story to him. Some of you may have
heard it before but I think it merits repeating.
Roger was giving an address to a graduating class that was held outdooors
among trees that were around the lawn area. It was back east somewhere in
the spring. While Roger gave his talk, his wife was aware of a number of
birds singing and wondered if it was distracting to Roger. She asked Roger
after his address and he said that it didn't bother him at all, in fact he
said that he had identified 21 different bird calls during his talk. It just
reinforces his known ability to ID birds by sound.
