This is Dale Goble with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

Fall migration has begun in earnest. Mike Denny reports that passerines
are beginning to move through Walla Walla. The shorebird migration is
farther along.

On July 27th Dan Svingen found a SOLITARY SANDPIPER and a LONG-
BILLED DOWITCHER at Mann Lake.

The following day, John and Marty Hirt found a FRANKLIN'S GULL and
a CASPIAN TERN in addition to a number of shorebirds including:
WESTERN, LEAST, and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, and GREATER YELLOWLEGS.

Mann Lake is east of Lewiston. To get there, take US 12 west into
Lewiston, cross the Clearwater River via the Memorial Bridge and stay in
the left lane. Take the first left after crossing the bridge onto Main
Street toward East Lewiston. At the blinking light, turn right onto
Lindsay Creek Road. Follow it until it terminates at Grelle Avenue. Turn
left onto Grelle and after Grelle makes a 20 mph right turn, turn left.
Immediately you'll see a sign for Mann Lake. Continue straight, through
the dead end, to the lake. See Idaho DeLorme p. 54, a-1.

On July 30th, Mike and MerryLynn Denny found several interesting birds
along Coppei Creek. 3 VEERY, 5 EASTERN KINGBIRDS, 8+ CATBIRDS,
6 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, and 1 singing SWAINSON'S THRUSH were
all present. To reach Coppei Creek, turn onto Lewis Creek Road a long
mile east of Dixie on Highway 12 in Walla Walla County. After about
250 yards, take the left fork up over the hill. Coppei Creek is at the
bottom of the canyon. Washington DeLorme p. 41, c-7.

On August 1, the Dennys found: 66 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 2
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 3 BLACK-NECKED STILTS, 20 AMERICAN
AVOCETS, 1 GREAT EGRET, 2 adult GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULLS, AND
2 BONAPARTE'S GULLS at the Walla Walla River Delta. The delta is
about 30 miles west of Walla Walla, Washington, just north of the
intersection of US 730 and US 12. Washington DeLorme p. 40, D1.
