Subject: pipits at Mt. Rainier

Last week was hiking from Sunrise. At Frozen Lake there were several pairs
of pipits feeding young. The nest were in heather- I never felt comfortable
approaching close enough to see actual nests but would see birds disappear
with insects in mouth and reappear nearby without. They would always
approach from same direction, landing 10 feet away and approaching discreetly.
Once a ground squirrel got too close and was chased away by the much smaller
pipit.
Also above Berkeley park were territorial Mt. bluebirds, and higher up
a flock of horned larks.
