Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This recording
was made Thursday August 8. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls at
233-3976.

A male COMMON GRACKLE began July 31, coming to a backyard feeder at the
Toketee Ranger Station in the Cascades east of Roseburg. It has been seen
several times since and may still be in the area.

A female or young HOODED WARBLER visited a backyard pond in Tigard August
5-6. It was not seen on August 7.

A bright male INDIGO BUNTING visited a feeder in St. Helens August 3, but
was not seen the next day.

On August 5 a VIRGINIA'S WARBLER was found among a mixed species flock of
birds on the juniper and sage covered slope on the north side of Degormo
Canyon in the Hart Mountain Refuge. Degormo Canyon is on the north side of
Warner Peak, above the Hot Springs Camp.

ELEGANT TERNS continue to be seen at Coos Bay. They are being found near
Pidgeon Point Road in the community of Empire between Coos Bay and
Charleston. A WILLET was at the shorebird flats at the South Jetty of the
Siuslaw River August 3. On August 2 an unusually large group of 22
WANDERING TATTLERS and good numbers of SURFBIRDS and both turnstones were
on the North Jetty of the Siuslaw. A WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE has been with a
flock of CANADA GEESE at the South Jetty of the Columbia River all week.

RED-NECKED PHALAROPES are moving through the state now and are being seen
in many areas. On August 5 a SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, six COMMON TERNS, and
eight GREAT EGRETS were on Sauvie Island. All the refuge roads are open so
you can now visit your regular birding spots.

Up to four GREAT EGRETS have been visiting Oaks Bottom in southeast
Portland in recent days, and another is being seen at the Forest Grove
Ponds.

Lately ACORN WOODPECKERS are being seen in the grove of dead trees on the
north side of the Sunset Highway just west of the North Plains exit. This
is about as far north as they get in the Willamette Valley.

A WESTERN KINGBIRD was near the Dicky Prairie Store southeast of Mollala
July 31. An unusual early adult DUNLIN was at Baskett Slough NWR August 1.

Over 100 PINYON JAYS were observed flying north past McKenzie Reservoir
east of Sisters August 2. The same day a LONG-BILLED CURLEW was at Hatfield
Lake near Bend. A female BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD is now coming to a feeder
in Prineville.

Thats it for this week.
