collaborating with a young Mexican ornithology student; we ran five mist
nets near the village where I'm working last week. It wasn't too productive
but we did catch several Berylline Hummers, a Dusky Hummer, a female
White-eared and a female Beautiful Hummer plus White-throated and
Rufous-sided Towhees, a pair of Rufous-capped Warblers, a Black-headed
Grosbeak, a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, House Finches, Lesser Goldfinches, and a
House Sparrow. Might well have been in southern Arizona with that list! I
did discover a population of Ocellated Thrashers on a small mountain just
above the village of San Juan Mixtepec, which for now is our field basecamp.
Just moved into a "bungalow" in Oaxaca which will be my home base for the
year: in the backyard I have nesting Rufous-backed Robins (apparently
introduced from elsewhere in Mexico), Tropical Kingbirds, Kiskadee
Flycatcher, Vermilion Flycatcher, Inca Dove, Berylline and Dusky Hummers,
White-collared Seedeater, Lesser Goldfinch, House Finch, and Curve-billed
Thrasher. Working on an interesting yard list! I'll copy the bird notes to
tweeters.
