Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird report. This recording
was made Thursday August 15. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls
at 233-3976.

Clear, hot weather continued through the week. Birding was slow and irregular.

The male COMMON GRACKLE, reported last week from the Toketee Ranger
Station, was seen again August 12. For updated information call Keith or
Mary Graves at (541) 498-2508.

An odd plumaged loon showing some characteristics of an ARCTIC LOON has
been spotted during the week in Yaquina Bay near the Marine Science Center.
It has bold white flanks.

On August 10 a LEAST FLYCATCHER was netted and banded on Oak Island on
Sauvie Island. Sauvies has been slow for birds because of high water and
hot temperatures. A flock of 18 GREAT EGRETS was along Rentenaar Road on
the east side of the Island August 12.

The 12 hour offshore trip out of Depoe Bay August 10 had fair but not great
results. Fog close in and few birds farther out. ARCTIC TERNS, SABINE'S
GULLS, LONG-TAILED JAEGERS, both LEACH'S and FORK-TAILED PETRELS, sharks,
Ocean Sunfish, and Dall Porpoise made the trip worthwhile.

Hundreds of SURF and WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were on the ocean at Yachats
August 9. About 20 GREAT EGRETS were along the Siuslaw River east of
Florence that day. Fair sized flocks of MARBLED MURRELETS are gathering off
the Rocky Creek and Boiler Bay Viewpoints near Depoe Bay now. Two ELEGANT
TERNS were at Alsea Bay August 11, an one was at Yaquina Bay August 13.

A PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER and a LONG-BILLED CURLEW were at Tillamook Bay
August 11. It's still rather slow there for shorebirds. Shorebirds are
somewhat more numerous, at least species-wise around the South Jetty of the
Columbia River. SEMIPALMATED and BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, WANDERING TATTLERS,
and a golden-plover were picked out of the swarms there.

Waterfowl are now moving southward along the coast and are gathering into
good sized flocks in some areas. Three STILT SNADPIPERS were in the White
Lake Unit of the Lower Klamath Refuge August 14, so the shorebird movement
continues.

Thats it for this week.
