Today, I took a day off from work and spent a few late afternoon hours
continuing my search for western fence lizard beaches. I have now found
them at three locations in south Puget Sound, all areas with abundant
weathered driftwood piled above the intertidal.

Near Anderson and McNeil islands, I saw about eight red-necked grebes, all
looking quite attractive in their breeding plumage. I saw a group of
harlequin ducks near McNeil Island, my first in south Puget Sound. Lots of
pigeon guillemots, though very few obvious fledglings. Two obligatory adult
bald eagles, lots of Bonaparte's gulls, spotted sandpipers, killdeer,
double-crested cormorants. Mount Rainier was stunning and, overall, it was
a fine day to be on the water.
