Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This recording
was made Thursday August 22. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls
at 233-3976.

The Toketee Ranger Station COMMON GRACKLE continues to be seen, but it is
highly erratic and unpredictable. On August 18 an adult LONG-TAILED JAEGER
with very long tail streamers was flying about Tumalo reservoir west of
Bend.

BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS and RED-NECKED PHALAROPE are being reported from many
areas of the state. On August 17 a RED KNOT and an unidentified
Golden-Plover was at Bandon. Three AVOCETS have been along Fenk Road west
of Tillamook for most of the week. Coastal shorebirding overall has been
spotty. On August 18 a POMARINE JAEGER was checking out the large number of
CASPIAN TERNS still gathered at the mouth of the Columbia River. Some SOOTY
SHEARWATERS are being seen from coastal headlands but fog has been a
problem. RED CROSSBILLS are now becoming more regularly reported from
coastal forests.

A group of three SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS were seen and heard at the Forest
Grove Ponds August 17. Three ARCTIC TERNS were reported from Morgan Lake in
the Baskett Slough NWR that day. A SOLITARY SANDPIPER was at Mohoff Pond in
Ankeny NWR south of Salem August 14. A PRAIRIE FALCON was there August 11.

On August 16 a group of 13 BROWN PELICANS was observed flying southward
over the Burnside Bridge in downtown Portland. So far they have not been
relocated.

Among the many shorebirds gathered at Willow Cove, east of Arlington,
August 16 were four unexpected MARBLED GODWITS. On August 17 three SOLITARY
SANDPIPERS and two BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were at Kinney Lake east of Joseph in
northeastern Oregon. At the Joseph Sewage Ponds that day was a SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHER. Several LESSER YELLOWLEGS were at the Enterprise Fish Hatchery
Ponds that day.

Landbird migrations have begun with flocks of flycatchers, warblers,
bluebirds and other species becoming conspicuous, especially at higher
elevations.

Thats it for this week.
