Join the "Second NTT World Bird Count" and the
"1996 Festival Mundial de las Aves"

NTT, a Japanese telecommunications provider, will hold the second
"NTT World Bird Count" from September 28 to October 13, 1996.
As in last year's "NTT World Bird Count" (an innovative birding event
of the coming "multimedia era"), birding reports from around the
world will be compiled and publicized via the Internet. Visit the

NTT will donate 1,000 Japanese Yen (approximately US$10) per every
reported species to BirdLife International for its conservation activities.

If you, whether a group or an individual, have a birdwatching trip or
event during this period, please send: (1) common names and scientific
names of observed birds, (2) your name and address (plus number of
participants in case you are a group), (3) date and location and,
(4) comments on birds and birdwatching, to the addresses provided at
the end of this message.

Your reports need to arrive before October 31.

The NTT World Bird Count is concurrently organized with
"Festival Mundial de las Aves" (WORLD BIRDWATCH), an
educational event organized by over 200 collaborating
environmental organizations. WORLD BIRDWATCH encourages
groups to educate the general public about birds through
fieldtrips and other educational and outreach activities.

WORLD BIRDWATCH has been organized 3 consecutive years,
in 1993 and 1995 at a global level, and in 1994 in the Americas.
Its first year the event focussed on migratory birds using the
slogan "Flight for Life". In 1994, it used "Flight, color and sound"
as its slogan to focuss attention on the wonderful world of birds,
and to incentivate people to observe them by attracting them to
their own parks and home gardens. "Conserving birds,
conserving their habitats" was the 1995 theme.

This year, organizations coordinating local events have been asked
to focus attention on "Threatened Birds" and the importance of
protecting key areas(*1) to prevent their global extinction.
Organizers of events in each country will be able to draw attention
to their 'own' globally threatened birds, and to initiate campaigns for
their conservation.

Through WORLD BIRDWATCH birdwatching will continue to be
promoted as a recreational activity that can interest people in a
wide variety of conservation issues and can help provide important
information for the study of birds.
