This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

Dan Svingen saw Idaho's 3rd or 4th BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE in
Lewiston on November 24. Incredibly, an adult MEW GULL was nearby.
Both birds were seen south of the Interstate Bridge where US 12
crosses into WA. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone else has seen
either bird again, and searches this morning were unsuccessful.

At Mann Lake near Lewiston, ID, on November 24, Dan Svingen saw 3
CANVASBACK and a male RED-BREASTED MERGANSER. Today, I
noted these species were still present, as were the 3 SANDHILL CRANE
that have resided all November, 2 DUNLIN, and a single SHORT-EARED
OWL. There were about 15 WESTERN GREBES, and a couple each of
HORNED and EARED. To get to Mann Lake, take US 12 west into
Lewiston, cross the Clearwater Bridge and immediately turn left toward
East Lewiston. Follow Main Street to the blinking yellow light and turn
right onto Lindsay Creek Road. Stay right at the Y and follow Lindsay
Creek until it dead ends at Grelle. Turn left onto Grelle, and just after
Grelle makes a 20 mph right turn, turn left toward the lake. Head
straight about 1.3 miles to the dead end and the parking area. ID

While you're in Lewiston, the 3 immature GREATER SCAUP seen last
week by Dan Svingen were seen by me today in the big levee pond (aka
West Pond), but the female RED-BREASTED MERGANSER Dan saw last
Sunday had departed. To reach the levee pond, take US 12 west into
Lewiston and stay right around the first traffic light. At the second
light, which is 18th Street, follow the signs for the US 12 west bypass.
In about 1.2 miles, you'll reach the parking lot for the big levee pond.
Watch for the PRAIRIE FALCON patrolling the river and harassing the
Rock Dove at the Lewiston Grain Terminal.

Dave Holick reports a PRAIRIE FALCON at the top of Central Grade,
between Lewiston and Genesee, on November 23. From Lewiston, you
may access Central Grade Road just east of the Clearwater Power
Company along US 12, east of Lewiston and across from Potlatch Corp.

BLUE JAYS, at least 3, are still in and around Moscow. Call me at

To finish off Idaho, Dan reports a SAY'S PHOEBE along the Whitebird
Battlefield Autotour Route just south of Grangeville last weekend.

All the rest of today's hotline sightings are from WA, called in by Mike
and MerryLynn Denny. Just southeast of Pasco, at McNary NWR
headquarters display pond today, November 29, were 14 TUNDRA
SWAN and 31 COMMON MERGANSER. WA DeLorme p. 40, C1.

On November 23, Mike and MerryLynn saw a single PEREGRINE
FALCON at Hood Park, which is where US 12 crosses the Snake River
just east of Pasco. WA DeLorme p. 39, C8.

Also today were 4 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER along US 12 between
Touchet and Lowden in Walla Walla County. A PRAIRIE FALCON was
along McDole Road west of Touchet. Head west from Touchet about a
mile to Byrnes Road. Follow Byrnes about a mile to McDole. WA

At Windust Park, which is on the north shore of the Snake River about 3
miles SW of Lower Monumental Dam, which is about 6 miles south of
Kahlotus, WA, today was a single GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW. WA
DeLorme p. 54, D4.

Today, 8 miles north of Walla Walla, WA along Harvey-Shaw Road,
north of the state penitentiary, at the giant cutbank along the road, was
a single GRAY-CROWNED ROSY FINCH. WA DeLorme p. 41, D5.

On November 23, southeast of Moses Lake, WA, the Denny's saw a
single SHORT-EARED OWL along road 2 SE, and a SNOWY OWL along
road L SE between road 3 SE and road 4 SE. WA DeLorme p. 69, D7.

Finally, Mike and MerryLynn had a single, white-striped form WHITE-
THROATED SPARROW in their College Place, WA yard on November

Sorry about last week's technological SNAFU. Just so you know, I
never see the recording machine - it's in someone else's house. I call
the hotline, press the access code, press the record new message code,
record the new hotline, and if all is correct, the machine responds with a
specific series of beeps. Well, last week, the machine beeped that all
was OK, but obviously to those of you who called Friday through
Monday, it wasn't. Sorry about that. From now on I'll preview the
recording in addition to the confirmation beeps supplied by the machine.
Oh, by the way, instead of swearing at the machine, call and swear at
me so I know there's a problem.
