The Washington BirdBox is a voice mailbox sponsored by the Washington
Ornithological Society. To leave a message about a notable sighting, or
to listen to the 12 most recent messages, call (206) 454-2662 and follow
the prompts. First-time BirdBox users may find it convenient, before
calling, to review the status of Washington's chickadee species.

4:41 p.m. 12-03-96: Patrick Sullivan reporting from Tacoma, Washington.
Birding at Ocean Shores today at selected sites included: At Damon Point,
11 SNOWY OWLS were observed, along with 3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS. The SNOWY
OWLS were observed just to the southeast of the main pond at Damon Point.
Also, at the Ocean Shores game range, 1 SNOWY OWL and 1 PRAIRIE FALCON
[were] observed between 2 p.m. and 2:20 p.m. at the north part of the game
range at Ocean Shores. At the Ocean Shores Marina, 1 female OLDSQUAW was
observed, and 3 additional OLDSQUAWS were observed at the Hoquiam sewage
treatment plant, along with 1 EARED GREBE.

10:19 p.m. 12-03-96: Dave Beaudette, 206-365-2083. Today, December the
third, I birded the Edmonds-to-Kingston ferry run. Near the Edmonds ferry
terminal was a female OLDSQUAW. About one-quarter of the way out from
Edmonds, a dark-morph POMERINE JAEGER accompanied the ferry to about
halfway across the Sound, then it headed south. At the boat launch area
near the headquarters of the Skagit Wildlife-Recreation Area, the NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH was still present.

6:38 p.m. 12-04-96: Tom Aversa, 206-782-7342. Took a ride around West
Seattle in the lousy weather today and [saw] a few interesting birds, I
guess. 2 OLDSQUAW [were] probably the best things [seen], across from the
Alki Bakery. [There were] 4 BLACK TURNSTONES just north of the Point, a
pair of BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, and about 90 BRANT. Also, had a drake EURASIAN
WIGEON over at UW [University of Washington] up on the grass with a bunch
of AMERICANS [message may or may not have been cut off at this point].

11:55 a.m. 12-05-96: Bob Sundstrom, 762-4327, reporting for December 4th.
On the Lummi Flats, a light-morph HARLAN'S RED-TAILED HAWK, immature, near
the south end of Hillare [sp?] Road, roosting in trees and also out near
the dike edge, which is accessible. This is off the end of Red River Road.
Also, along Dreyton [sp?] Harbor in Blaine at the base of the road that
goes out to the dock in Blaine, a mostly albino ??? [sounded like large]
GULL, all pure white dorsally with grayish wing tips, typical winter
adult, darker mottling on the head and neck, and a yellow bill. Very
intriguing looking.

3:15 p.m. 12-05-96: Ralph ??? [could not understand last name, and caller
has not called me back to verify spelling], 206-746-6181. [I] have LINCOLN
SPARROW still out behind my place, and today had a WHITE-HOODED SPARROW. I
live in Bellevue, just around the corner from the Lake Hills Library. So,
if you go out to the blueberry farm behind the Lake Hills Library, in the
mass of blackberries back there, there's a good chance you'll find it.
