SPRING 1997 HAWK MOUNTAIN SANCTUARY
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION INTERNSHIPS

April 1 through August 1997

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association is a private, non-profit =
organization
with programs in education, research, and conservation policy that are
national and international in scope. Hawk Mountain, established in 1934,
was the world's first sanctuary for hawks, eagles, and other birds of =
prey.

Located in the scenic Appalachian Mountains of southeastern =
Pennsylvania,
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary offers internships in Environmental Education,
Ecological Research, and Environmental Monitoring. (A Sanctuary =
Management
internship may be offered beginning in 1997.) All interns work together
with staff mentors on projects at the Sanctuary and gain hands-on
experience in their chosen fields.

Education interns help guide field trips and present on-site and
off-grounds programs to school children and the general public. Emphasis =
is
on program development and presentation. Interns are trained in the care
and use of captive live raptors for education and also work with exhibit
design and implementation. Each education intern completes an =
independent
project that may include the development of new programs or teaching
materials for Sanctuary or off-site use.

In addition to their teaching responsibilities, education interns =
typically
have opportunities to work in the field with experts on activities such =
as
birdbanding, live trapping of small mammals, floral surveys, plant and
animal taxonomy, and other areas of natural history.

SESSIONS:
Spring-Summer Session: April through July
Fall Session: Mid-August through mid-December

ELIGIBILITY AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Open to undergraduates and graduate students, college graduates, and =
people
beginning careers in conservation. Applicants must have at least two =
years
of college course work and exhibit a willingness and ability to interact
with the public. Interns must be eager to gain and share knowledge and =
be
able to respond professionally to unanticipated events.

REMUNERATION AND BENEFITS:
Interns receive free housing on Sanctuary grounds and a $500 monthly
stipend. Interns may also receive course credit from their respective
universities, as arranged by the intern.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
Contact the Intern Coordinator for internship information and =
application
materials. Only official and complete Hawk Mountain application forms
received at the Sanctuary before the deadline dates will be considered.
Deadlines: Spring/Summer session--February 15 (January 15 for =
international
applicants); Fall session--June 15 (May 1 for international applicants).
