This past Saturday, while participating on a CBC in Tofino, on the west
coast of Vancouver Island, I was surprised to watch as an Emperor Goose
chose to land in the middle of a two-lane highway. It was early in the
morning so there were few vehicles on the road. The bird chose to land
immediately in front of my vehicle (I could have missed it if my travel
plans had changed by seconds either way) but before I could get my camera
out, the truck behind had pulled out to pass and chased the bird off the road.
I continued down to the docks in town and was able to relocate the bird and
watched it fly over water toward the neighbouring island of Flore's.
Unfortunately the bird could not be relocated.

Other interesting birds were the 217 Red-necked Grebes, the 900 Sanderlings,
the 334 Varied Thrushes. (this is particularly interesting since most of
the count area is beach and water, the forested land section of the
peninsula is rather limited)
cheers,

Don Cecile
