Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This recording
was made Thursday December 19. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls

The Yaquina Bay KING EIDER continues to be seen just downstream from the
bridge in Newport. It is very consistent, but is often in the channel far
from shore. Up to three OLDSQUAWS are in the same area. The YELLOW-BILLED
LOON reported earlier has not been relocated.

A gray phased GYRFALCON was at Staggerwald NWR near Washougal, Washington
December 14. Take Highway 14 out of Vancouver to reach the area, however,
the refuge itself is closed.

A COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD has been coming to a Grants Pass feeder for over a
month now. If interested in this bird contact Dennis Vroman in Grants Pass.


On December 14 a PALM WARBLER was observed along the nature trail at the
Marine Science Center on Yaquina Bay. A WHITE-TAILED KITE was at Hidden
Valley along the Upper Yaquina Bay that day. Also on December 14 over 50
ANCIENT MURRELETS and several PIGEON GUILLEMOTS and MARBLED MURRELETS were
off Boiler Bay. An EARED GREBE was with the many HORNED GREBES on the ocean
just offshore that day.

A moribund YELLOW WARBLER was picked up at SE 38th. and Salmon Street in
mid-town Portland and brought to the Care Center December 16. It appeared
to be in good condition but died soon after arrival.

The Salem Airport SNOWY OWL continues to be fairly consistent, but the
Tangent bird remains elusive and is missing much of the time. There is also
a HARLAN'S RED-TAILED HAWK in that general area.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW has been staked out south of Tangent. A few miles
south of Tangent on Highway 99E turn left onto Driver Road. About 150 yards
south of the Calapooia River Bridge, near a small grove of oaks, bird seed
has been scattered along the roadway, attracting the local sparrow flocks
including the CLAY-COLORED.

The HARRIS' SPARROW continues to come to Barbara Combs feeders in Eugene.
Call Barbara at 541-689-6660 if interested in seeing this bird. A
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW is among the sparrow flocks in Alton-Baker Park in
Eugene. This flock often contains interesting and rare birds during the
winter months.

A CATTLE EGRET was among 15 GREAT EGRETS along Nonpareil Road just east of
Sutherlin December 16.

A HARRIS' SPARROW is now coming to feeders in Tygh Valley in Wasco County.

Christmas Bird Counts begin this week-end. Take part in the action, check
