not-just-birders,

A related-topic book which I found very provocotive is "The Spell of the
Sensuous" by David Abram. The approach of this book was to build a bridge
between the now "normal" human perspective of nature to the "traditional"
human perspective of connectedness to nature... He is well versed in
Western scientific methodologies, and addresses this issue in a manner
that many of us who are pseudo-scientific in our belief systems (yes, I do
mean belief systems) can find acceptable - hence the bridge.

A fascinating passage in this book details how a group of people have come
to adopt into there language phrases of the FOX SPARROW: "grandma stuck an
awl in my ear" is the bird's refrain (not in English, of course); hope
this tweaks your intereset!
