We have 8 inchs of new snow on several inchs of old snow here in Joyce
(14 miles west of Port Angeles). The usual birds have been feeding
ferociously. The highligt has been 21 Varied Thrushs(VaTh) at one time. The
most we have had previously this season is 6. We seldom get VaTh at the
feeder except when it snows. Do other people notice the same thing?
Along the same line, after being noticably scarce for several months,
Evening Grosbeaks have been noted in some numbers in the last 10 days or so.
None at our feeder but our Sequim Xmas Count had an all time local high of 92
and several people in the last week have reported flocks of up to 40. Perhaps
these two species have been driven lower by the snow. I suspect the VaTh's
are out in the woods in numbers every year and get driven in by the snow. But
it is hard to have many Evening Grosbeaks around without seeing or hearing
them.
