This is the second winter that we've seen birds fly into our windows when
there's snow on the ground. So we do what we can (from the inside) to
discourage this behavior. Haven't had any bird-kills so far, fortunately.
The Varied Thrushes are the first birds to start feeding in the AM and the
last to leave for the night. They search for food all day long in our yard.
Yes, they're beautiful against the snow. We have a covered front porch so
many birds "rest" under the porch (maybe 15 or more fly out when the front
door is opened) and have taken over the porch, under the swing. Besides the
usual birds, we have a few house sparrows, siskins and a song sparrow, and a
flicker that's been around for months. We also have a flying squirrel at the
feeders (seed and suet) at night. In the 1980's we had a pair of flying
squirrels for several years, in the same cedar tree. One of our two Red
Squirrels was playing in the snow yesterday...running down the tree, diving
nose first into the snow.
Looked like lots of fun!
