I had a few chickadees and nuthatches eating from my suet feeders stocked
with store-bought suet cakes. About a month ago I visited my local butcher
to buy ground up frozen suet. I then stopped at the grocery store to
purchase two bags of onions just to get the plastic netting. I have a bag of
unrendered suet hanging in a small ornamental tree on the main trunk and a
bag hanging at the end of a branch of a large Spruce. The birds have
completely ignored the suet cakes over preference to the unrendered suet. I
attract chestnut-backed chickadees, black-capped chickadees, red-breasted
nuthatches and Steller jays. The chestnut-backed chickadees and Steller jays
are particulary fond of it.

It looks like it is easier to snatch a piece of unrendered suet rather than
to peck at a suet block. Maybe that is why the birds like it so much. If
they have a choice, go for the easier, softer suet.

This summer I want to try the oatmeal recipe that was posted yesterday.

>Three days ago, in with the raw fat, I placed a block of rendered beef fat/seed mix that a local butcher friend is testing on the market. - fat and
mixed wild bird seed only. I promised her that I would help to promote her
new product, but I'm having difficulty. The raw fat is gone; the new stuff
remains virtually untouched. Any similar experiences out there? Will they
come around?<
