Jerry & I were also at Nisqually on Saturday, and were treated to a flushed
American Bittern just as we came in, at the little pond near the shed that
says "Chlorine". We spent the better part of an hour watching 3 Short Eared
Owls hunt over the western side of the refuge and take turns perching up in
short trees.

Sunday, we took our usual walk through our local park here in Puyallup on
Clark's Creek, and both remarked that we saw more birds than any other day we
can remember. We take this walk a lot and have been doing so for about two
years. Since we suffered a real drought while there was snow on the ground,
perhaps everything came out with the pussy willows. I mention numbers when it
is more than we usually encounter in a 2 mile loop around our house.

Starting at the Puyallup fish hatchery:
2 sharp-shinned hawks, one adult that swooped over and "buzzed" an immature
sitting and minding "his" own business
1 yellow rump warbler
6 or so ruby-crowned kinglets, displaying and "buzzing" us
Stellar's Jays
red-tailed hawk
belted kingfisher
Northern Shovelers
green wing teals
4 great Blue heron
1 common golden eye
large flock of American Wigeon
about 30 bufflehead
red breasted sapsucker
2 downy woodpeckers
bewick's wren
2 brown creepers
golden-crowned kinglet, down low in the trees where you could really see him
plus the usual song sparrows, juncos and chickadees, Canada geese and
mallards. Sorry, Dennis, I don't count gulls.
