Hey Tweeters: Yesterday around 4pm while briding with a fellow Alaskan
summer birder I had my Fujinon field scope Super Ed 80 set up near the
fog horn at Point Wilson, Port Townsend, Washington. About 100 yards of
shore we saw coming in with the tide what appeared to be a Kittlitz's
Murrelet in winter plumage. The dark eye surrounded by white was
plainly visable. We kept looking at the National Geographic field guide
and couldn't place it as any other alcid. I have seen these birds on a
daily basis in their summer nesting grounds in Alaska, but have never
seen one before in winter plumage. Can anyone out there help me?. How
often are they ever seen here in the Northwest Washington area?????? I
have no records available. Anyway, if your in that area keep your
eyes open. I don't know what else it could have been.
