In winter they move down as the creeks freeze. I've seen a pair on a small
stretch of unfrozen creek at 5000' on Glacier Peak in January. There were
five foot tall snow banks on either side. We were bundled in thermal
underware and down jackets and the birds were diving in and out of the water
behaving like it was just another day.
