*Everyone* got along without Howell and Webb until last year, so, no, I
guess it's not required. I balked at bringing the tome, but unbalked and was
grateful. The range maps were extremely useful.
If you know the birds and the layout of the country, it's probably not
essential; other books will do.
But the pros and con of Howell and Webb's book were discussed just a
couple of weeks ago in this forum...look back at the archive for more
thoughts....
