Subject: Those darn livestock

The current discussion generated (this time) by Jon Anderson has been very
interesting. I think there is a point to be made about *management* in that
*some* refuge areas may reasonably be allowed to support cattle, as some
Tweets have discussed. However, to my mind there is never a good reason to
allow degradation of riparian zones, an issue which has received scant
mention (thanks, Don) in the current thread. And, although
grasslands/pastures may grow faster west of the Cascades, nothing can grow
when banks are continuously eroded by the hooves of livestock. Take a look
at what sheep have done near the mouth of the Sixes River in Oregon, if you
need convincing.
