Thank you for your recent e-mail message to Governor Lowry regarding the
Northwest Straits Marine Sanctuary. The governor appreciates that you took
the time to share thoughts with him on this important issue.

In reference to reports that the National Ocean and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) would discontinue its participation in the marine
sanctuary proposal, you should know that no announcement was made to this
effect. Because the state is a partner with NOAA in this effort, we have
had discussions with them about the future direction of this program, and we
expect these discussions to continue for a while longer.

It is obvious that so many people feel very strongly that the process
initiated so long ago must be continued with the development of a full-blown
draft environmental impact statement. Both NOAA and the state certainly
heard this message and appreciate your letting us know about your concerns.

NOAA and the State have made a commitment to the people to issue a draft
Environmental Impact Statement and to hold public hearings on the proposed
NW
Straits Marine Sanctuary. Please keep that commitment and allow people to
debate and discuss the merits of the proposal.
