A few things for the record. The King Eider was still there at the west
foot of Hastie Lake Rd. on Whidbey I. last Saturday, Feb. 10. George
Gerdts and I probably passed within a half mile of the Great Gray last
Saturday but it wasn't discovered until Sunday. So it goes. We did
manage to locate two Harris's Sparrows, the one from the CBC at the Snow
Goose Produce area on Fir Is. (it had moved north of Rawlins Rd. a bit
however) and another somewhat better marked individual just west of the
Samish Slough bridge on Bayview-Edison Rd. in brambles on the south side.
About 400 mostly Trumpeter Swans on Fir I. near La Conner, with two small
flocks later flying overhead calling, one flock of each species. Nice
comparisons. Two Short-eared Owls were performing at the North Fork
access salt marsh at the west end of Rawlins Rd. We saw a dark adult
Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk along Bayview-Edison near D'Arcy Rd. No sign of
the Ross's Goose or Gyr. Ed Deal saw the Prairie Falcon that morning but
it gave us the slip, though a fine adult female double-banded (on both
legs) Peregrine was hanging around the West 90. It had a rather clean
white breast & throat suggestive of _anatum_ but showed little if any
color below, unlike _anatum_, according to the experts, anyway. The big
Snow Goose flock with the Blue Goose in it was nowhere to be found. All
the Black-bellied Plovers were way off the road in stubble so it was
hopeless to look for the golden plover (I've missed it four times out of
four so far).
