Fellow Seabird Researchers,

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is conducting research on a nearshore
reef off southern Oregon in order to characterize the reef community and
determine potential impacts of bull kelp (Nereocystis). This work involves
determining kelp biomass estimates; conducting scuba surveys to inventory fish,
invertebrates; and characterizing benthic habitats at various scales to
determine species-habitat associations. We will also study seabird use of kelp
beds. The emergent rocks of Orford Reef support 7 seabird nesting colonies with
about 24,000 birds, plus many other migrating birds at various times of the
year.

So far,I have found little information in the literature on seabird/kelp
associations. Perhaps there are recent or current studies or un-published data
you are familiar with. I would appreciate any leads on the subject of seabird
interaction with kelp species, as well as small-scale seabird-habitat
associations, or methods for studying seabird foraging behavior on the water.
