If they follow true to form, Rufous Hummingbirds should arrive on the
Oregon coast this week. So, it's time to do some feeder maintanence.

If you're like me, your empty feeder spent the winter hanging on its little
nail outside the kitchen window. Bring it in an wash it using a 10%
bleach solution. This should remove even the most stubborn mildrew and
mold. Rinse thoroughly. Boil all parts for 10 minutes.

The most effective sugar solution is 1 part table sugar to 4 parts water.
I recommend bringing the water to a boil and adding the sugar. Colors are
optional, but contrary to some sources are harmless.

The solutions should be changed at least weekly; more frequently in hot
weather. If the solution turns cloudy, this is also a strong indicator that
the solution should be changed (and you should re-clean)
