I usually try to stay out of these kinds of discussions, however I must
at least support Don's passion about the environment. As we witness the
steady decline of habitat, it galls me to talk about compromise. This
compromise always seems to result in the destruction of another piece of
habitat--witness what's going on over by Quilcene right now. I feel a
very tangible and indeed almost physical loss when I read about a stand
of old growth being sacrificed to the economic gods. I imagine Slade
Gorton is like a kid with his first ice cream cone as he delights in this
defeat of the hated environmentalists. Just once, I'd like to see a so-
called compromise go in the direction of the environment rather than the
fat cats Gorton is supported by. So Don speaks with passion--I think we
need more of that!
