If you're into hiking and it's not too cold up high, there's a
great trail from the parking lot in Carr Canyon to the crest
of the ridge of the Huachucas. There's even and old fire
lookout that's available for renting, apparently, from the USFS
for intrepid campers who like being struck by lightning.

I did this hike in July when penstemmon were in bloom, and there
were hummers all over. It was nice, as a change of pace, to see
them feeding "in real life" rather than at the feeders one birds
at everywhere else.

The white blimp-like thing hovering over the ridge is a high-tech
instrument in the drug interdiction effort. When I was there last
it had just been struck by lightning, causing $1.5 million dollars
worth of damage to the top-secret electronics inside. It was
supposed to be grounded by a conductor running to earth via the
tether but continuity had been lost and the Army (which runs it
for DEA) hadn't noticed. Your tax dollars at work.

The low-tech approach to drug interdiction crawls around in
Ford Broncos and occasionally will question people wandering
around some of the canyons towards the border southwest of
the range (the ones mentioned by Lane).

The small town of Sierra Vista is the pits.
