I agree both the locals in the pickup and the "photoheads" were not
acting properly. But don't you think it's a bit like lumping jaywalkers
with bankrobbers? The honking of horns and purposeful attempt to
distract birders and bird alike is blatant and rude. The so-called
photo-heads were trying to record the magic of the moment. I agree they
had no buisness blocking your view, but I've talked to experts on this
owl and they say it is one of the most tame and approachable of all owls.
Perhaps the "photoheads" knew this and thought they were not jeopardizing
the well-being of that precious bird. After all, the owl has been there,
I've heard, since at least last Christmas, and it hasn't been scared off yet.
If someone in a sincere and respectful way wants to get a once-in-a-lifetime
shot, and if they MOMENTARILY block the view of those who want to stay
further away, I think it's OK. Many "photoheads" are also birders and
I'd like to consider myself both. I was lucky enough to get a few
passable images and several people gave me their address to send them
some shots if successful. Now I just wish I had enough bucks to be not
only a photohead but also a scopehead!
