Went out toward Vancouver Lake today to survey the damage. The road is
now open to the Lake, but you cannot go in the park.
Western Grebes continue to feed in the oft-flooded farm field
just west of town. Swans and geese were readily seen in the area as well
as coots and a pied-billed grebe. Water is still quite high and could be
interesting as migration starts. Didn't tarry long as storm clouds kept
rolling in, but there are few sights as wonderful as a group of swans
rising against a backdrop of grey storm clouds. What a wonderful thing
it is to live in a place where I'm spoiled by these wonderful birds.
(For those on the Palouse, check the scablands NW of St John in about two
weeks or so if they aren't moving already, Sheep Lake especially). RK
