I recently received a note from the biologist at Midway Atoll NWR, who
said she has been having a little trouble finding volunteers to assist with
the seabird monitoring out there. If anyone has three or more months free
(minimum commitment required) and would like to participate in an
all-expense-paid stint with the USFWS, contact her:

Duties include assisting with ongoing biological surveys; observing and
recording a variety of basic data on habitat, reproductive success, and
distribution; banding birds; and computing, compiling, and summarizing data
in tabular, graphic, or narrative form.

Midway is home to the largest colonies of Laysan Albatross, Black Noddy,
White (Fairy) Tern, and Red-tailed Tropicbird in the Hawaiian chain. Other
nesting species include shearwaters, petrels, boobies, and frigatebirds.

(Songbird addicts need not apply; Common Mynas and Common Canaries--both
introduced--comprise the entire passerine community.)
