For the last several years I lived in the woods while attending graduate
school. I camp out in the open or under a tarp, allowing for a free
movement of critters through my campsite (deer, thrushes, coyotes, racoons,
and occasionally black bear). I sleep in a deep nest of wool blankets and
army surplus sleeping bags, with just the top of my head sticking out.
Several times each spring I am awakened in the morning by a black-capped
chickadee who perches on my head and tugs at my dark hair for nesting
material. However, I hide under the covers when the horned owls hoot, as I
worry that they will mistake my locks for a bushy-tailed woodrat.
