June of '94 we were on a rafting trip through Canyonlands in Utah. Our
guide was wearing bright orange shorts, and his oar handles were bright red,
as was the water canteen. A little blur flew out over the water and started
pecking at his shorts! Then it perched on the oar handles for a while. It
seemed tired - at least, that was one reason we could think of for its just
sitting there in a boat full of rafters. Our guide was so amazed he was
afraid to move until it flew away. Consensus was it was a juvenile
black-chinned hummer.
