Good point Don. Last summer at the in-law's farm in BC my wife Kate and I
were sitting on the farmhouse porch which has four humming bird feeders.
Kate had on a bright red t-shirt. We were in deep the shade under the
overhang away from the feeders yet a couple of the hummers came right in and
hovered less than a foot in front of her for up to 15 seconds until they
determined that she was not a flower or covered in sugar solution(she is
sweet though).
