The fact that Peggi stood and fought for the Pacific Lumber redwoods means
that they are still standing today. The Heritage Grove may finally be given
to the people as part of a debt-for-nature swap due to the sins of PalCo's
owner, Charles Hurwitz. Sometimes even the local fights are longer than a
person's will. I realize that-- all help is good.

I understand the need to do immediate things to help the birds, and it is all
very important. What I am requesting is that people give support to those
fighting the endless fight- not live in denial of it.

It is the myth that money runs the world. CULTURE runs the world; otherwise,
we would not have below-cost logging and federally subsidized logging roads
all over our National Forests. As I am fond of saying, we do not yet sell
our children on the streets, th0ugh we could make money off of it. It is the
culture that decides what is bought and sold. In Japan, it is virtually
impossible to chop down a tree on the homeland, though Japanese logging
abuses worldwide are well-documented. It is a cultural decision.

The obligation that we incur by enjoying the natural world and using it for
spiritual fulfillment is towards its long-term preservation. That means that
we all have an obligation towards helping with the fight at certain times in
our life, and staying currently informed when we are not fighting.

This election year will be a big one in Idaho. Idahoans that love the woods
are going to have to work hard this year-- it's not going to be optional.
We pretty much lost the Payette NF this year. If we don't win, we'll lose
the Clearwater NF.
