TODAY IS NATIONAL "RIDER REPEAL" CALL IN DAY
********************************************

"Stop the Clearcuts, Restore the Laws, Protect our Forests"

Call Congress at (202)224-3121

Call the White House at (202)457-1111

Tuesday, February 27, marks the beginning of eight months of "lawless
logging" under the Timber Clearcut Rider.

On July 27, 1995, President Clinton signed the rider into law as part of
the Rescissions Act, suspending our basic environmental laws including
the ESA and the Clean Water Act for timber sales from our national
forests.

The results? Our Ancient Forests are being clearcut. Rivers are being
polluted. Live, healthy forests are being cut in the name of "salvage."

Over 350 timber sales have been proposed so far as a result of the
Timber Clearcut Rider, many in key roadless areas, important wildlife
habitat, or critical watersheds. None of them need comply with ANY of
our environmental laws -- and most don't!

Just last Saturday, President Clinton said in Seattle WA that the timber
rider was a "mistake." Clinton has pledged to "fix" it, but what does
that mean?

There is a hot debate going on in the White House now about whether
Clinton should come out for a partial "fix" that will still allow
hundreds of clearcuts -- or whether he should take a strong position in
support of total repeal of "logging without laws."

Meanwhile, Congresswomen Elizabeth Furse (D-OR) and Connie Morella (R-
MD) have filed HR 2745 to repeal the timber rider, restore the laws, and
protect our forests. A companion bill will be filed in the Senate soon
by Sens. Bill Bradley (D-NJ) and Barbara Boxer (D-CA), also to fully
repeal the rider.

Tuesday, February 27, is a day for citizens across this country to call
the White House (202-456-1111) and ask President Clinton to support
total repeal of the timber clearcut rider. AND, to call your Members of
Congress (202-224-3121) and request that they cosponsor the
Furse/Morella bill (HR 2745) or the Boxer/Bradley bill (no number, not
yet filed).

All Members of Congress should also be asked to call the White House to
express support for complete repeal of the rider. Thanks for your help!
