Another spot where Wood Ducks are reliably found on the Seattle CBC is in
the back (south) part of Cozy Cove on Lake Washington. Cozy Cove lies
between Hunts Point and Yarrow Point. This is intensely private shoreline
except for one spot. Go to the Hunts Point town hall, just north of Hwy.
520 off 84th on the right. From the southeast corner of the small parking
lot a path heads off to the south around the side of a tennis court, then
joins a paved bicycle path paralleling the north side of 520. Go left
(east). Soon you come to a small, wooded Nature Park on the left. Leave
the bike path and follow the "official" (beauty-barked) trail in a general
lakeward direction, then when it starts to loop back, continue obstinately
on an ad-hoc footpath to the south shore of Cozy Cove. There are several
vantage points between the bushes and overhanging tree branches offering
vistas out over the water. This sheltered cove can be full of all manner of
diving and dabbling ducks, and other waterbirds, in the winter season. It
is no more than a ten-minute walk from the parking lot.
