2-28-96 Wed. Marymoor clear 55f no wind 4:00-6:00 6 observers

At Marymoor, I saw a Song Sparrow (SOSP) in the shrubs. It was very
friendly. I got about two feet away from it, then it flittered away.

How do you tell a SOSP male from female? Is there a difference between
the imm. SOSP and an adult?

Feb. 16, 1996 Friday Lake Sammamish Park cloudy temp.55 4:00-6:00

My teacher took some people to Lake Sammamish park to meet a man
Richard Roulette. He was going to show us the barn owls. We saw the male
barn owl first. We could see that it was a male because its face wasn't
very heart-shaped. After looking around a bit more, we saw the female
with her distinct heart-shaped face. When we were done looking at the
owls, we went down to the water and noticed a Heron Rookery in the trees.
Richard told us that there was 50-60 nests in the tree.

Does anyone know how long the Heron rookery has been there? And does
anyone know if the owls will stay through summer?

Stephanie

Richard showed us to a grove of trees where the barn owls
nest. A barn owl almost hit me with a pellet. Shannon, Stephanie and
I dissected the pellet and found three intact vertebrate.
Thank you Richard for helping educate kids wanting to learn
more about birds.

IF barn owls migrate where do they migrate in the summer?

FEB-17 SAT SCAGIT AND SAMISH FLATS CLOUDY & RAINY 45-50 DEGREES LIGHT
WIND 8:30 TO 4:30 NUMBER OF OBSERVERS:8

WE SAW TWO MERLS ONE ON RAWLINS AND ANOTHER ON NORTH EDISON. THE FIRST
ONE ON RAWLINS ROAD GOT SPOOKED WHEN WE GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND THE BIRD
FLEW. THE SECOND WE GOT THE SCOPE ON AND AND THEN HE LEFT. WE ALSO SAW TWO
PEREGRINES, THE FIRST ONE FLEW OVER US ON WEST 90. THE OTHER WE LOOKED
AT. IT WAS ON BOW ROAD AND WAS FLYING FROM PERCH TO PERCH, I NOTICE IT
HAD A LARGE MALOR STRIPE. WE SAW A DARK MORPH RED-TAILED HAWK ON PIONEIR
HIGHWAY.

I WAS WONDERING SHOULDN'T THE PEREGRINE BE FARTHER DOWN SOUTH?

DO DARK MORPHS HAVE TO BE BORN FROM OTHER DARK MORPH OR CAN THEY BE BORN
FROM REGULAR RED-TAILS.

Feb,28 Wed Four Block Away From School
Sunny 55 Degrees No Wind 4:00-6:00 Six Obeservers

As Marisa, Josh, Connor, Sachiko, myself and Dean were driving down the
road about four blocks from school we spotted a Band-Tailed pigeon.
Because we thought it was not going to go anywhere we stoped and put the
scope on it. In about five minutes the Band-Tailed pigeon took flight
just as a Coppers hawk flew in so we looked at it until it took wing. as
most of us scaned the area with the binoculors marisa messed with the
scope and fond the cause of the Coppers hawk leaving. It was a Merlin
and after a few quick seconds the merlin left. We folowed the Merlin in
the binoculors until it was out of sight

How much time does the Merlin spend in the nest a nestling?
How many miles or acers do Merlins claim as there territory?
Why was the Coppers hawk spooked away by a smaller Hawk?
Do Merlins or Copers hawks have the same mate year after year?

Dakota,

On February 17 a few kids in my class went birding. My favorite part was
when a Bald Eagle (BaEa) fly over a flock of snow geese. They looked as
if they where pealing themselvs off of the ground and then flew back to
the ground.

How do you tell how old a BaEa is?
