A New Species of Small Flightless Duck from Amsterdam Island, Southern =
Indian Ocean (Anatidae: Anas). Storrs L Olson and Pierre Jouventin. pp =
1-9. Anas marecula described from fossils. Island appears to have been =
inhabited by endemic population that was exterminated by humans or =
human-introduced mammals in the past two hundred years.

Spring Migration of Western Sandpipers along the Pacific Coast of North =
America: A Telemetry Study. George C Iverson, Sarah E Warnock, Robert W =
Butler, Mary Anne Bishop and Nils Warnock. pp 10-21. Followed 77 =
radio-tagged birds from Calif to Alaska during the 1992 Spring =
migration. "We conclude that most spring migrant Western Sandpipers use =
a short-flight hopping migration strategy rather than a few sustained =
flights." Stresses importance of maintaining a continuous complex of =
intertidal wetland habitats along the migration route.

Is Parental Care a Constraint on the Habitat Use of Common Eider =
Females? Jan Ove Bustnes. pp 22-26. Study suggests that in a large sea =
duck with highly developed ducklings at hatching, parental care does not =
constrain habitat use very much compared to females without young. =
Trosmo, Norway.

Wetland Selection by American Green-winged Teal Breeding in British =
Columbia. Gil A Paquette and C Davison Ankney. pp 27-33. Forested =
habitat at Riske Creek, Fraser Plateau of south-central BC, wetland =
fertility was an important factor influencing distribution of teal.

Technique-dependent Biases in Determination of Diet Composition: An =
Example with Ring-billed Gulls. Kevin M Brown and Peter J Ewins. pp =
34-41. Sampling regurgitated pellets was biased by the =
over-representation of indigestible items (human garbage) and lack of =
soft foods (earthworms). Lake Erie, Port Colborne, Ontario.

Seasonal Decline in Clutch Size of the Barnacle Goose in Svalbard. Laila =
Dalhaug, Ingunn M Tombre and Kjell Einar Erikstad. pp 42-47. Females =
that arrive first at breeding grounds nested first, had the longest =
prelaying period, produced the largest clutches, had the longest =
incubation period. Nevertheless, brood size at hatching was larger than =
late nesters. Results don't support nutrient reallocation hypothesis.

Survival of Northern Pintail Ducklings on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, =
Alaska. Jas B Grand and Paul L Flint. pp 48-53. Early nesters had better =
nesting success and duckling survival, which may offset higher =
nutritional costs of early nesting.

Nesting Success of Northern Pintails on the Coastal Yukon-Kuskokwim =
Delta, Alaska. Paul L Flint and J Barry Grand. pp 54-60. Conclude that =
sub-arctic and prairie nesting pintails have similar reproductive =
potential.

Age-specific Survival and Philopatry in Three Species of European Ducks: =
A Long-term Study. Peter Blums, Aivars Mednis, Ilmars Bauga, Jas D =
Nichols and Jas E Hines. pp 61-74. Northern Shovelers, Common Pochards =
and Tufted Ducks at Engure Marsh, Latvia.

Nesting Habits of the Loggerhead Shrike in Sagebrush. Christopher P =
Woods and Tom J Cade. pp 75-81. "The preservation of Idaho's sagebrush =
rangelands will be important to the long-term survival of this species =
in the state." Low nest heights on Snake River Plain and north front of =
Owyhee Mountains.

Survivorship, Breeding Dispersal and Mate Fidelity in Eastern Kingbirds. =
Michael T Murphy. pp 82-92. Color-banded population at Charlotte Creek, =
Delaware Co., New York.

Establishment of Mass Hierarchies in Broods of the Black Kite. Javier =
Vinuela. pp 93-99. Relative importance of hatching asynchrony etc at =
Matas Gordas, Donana Natl Park, Spain.

Nest Density and Success of Columbids in Puerto Rico. Frank F =
Rivera-Milan. pp 100-113. Nesting of 8 species of pigeons/doves was =
studied.=20

The Effect of Thermal Microclimate on Foraging Selection by Wintering =
Mountain Chickadees. Douglas G Wachob. pp 114-122. Medicine Bow Natl =
Forest, Sierra Madre Mtns, Wyoming. "..thermal environment, in addition =
to food availability, may contribute to foraging site choice in =
winter..."

Forest Structural Characteristics of Accipiter Nesting Habitat: Is There =
an Allometric Relationship? Melissa S Siders and Patricia L Kennedy. pp =
123-132. Jemez Mtns and Pajarito Plateau in New Mexico. Commonly =
measured forest structural characteristics may be inadequate for =
predicting suitable accipiter nesting habitat.

The Importance of Productivity to the Dynamics of a Swainson's Thrush =
Population. Matthew D Johnson and Geoffrey R Guepel. pp 133-141. =
Palomarin Field Station, Point Reyes, Calif. Population limited by =
production of young on the breeding ground.

Old Nest Material in Nestboxes of Tree Swallows: Effects on Reproductive =
Success. Wallace B Rendell and Nicolaas M Verbeek. pp 142-152. Creston =
Wildl Mgmt Area, British Columbia. Nesting phenology, reproductive =
output, nestling size were not different between pairs using boxes with =
and without old nesting material. No significant association between =
numbers of fowl mites, bird fleas or blowflies per nestling.

The Boreal Owl at the Southern Terminus of the Rocky Mountains: =
Undocumented Longtime Resident or Recent Arrival? Dale W Stahlecker and =
Russell B Duncan. pp 153-161. Suggests they've been there since the =
Pleistocene.

Lombardo, PA Thorpe, R Cichewicz, M Henshaw, C Millard, C Steen and TK =
Zeller. pp 167-172. Mates trade cloacal bacteria during copulation.

The Effect of Male Presence on Nestling Growth and Fluctuating Asymmetry =
in the Blue Tit. Mats Bjorklund. pp 172-175. The absence of a feeding =
male has the most pronounced effect on the chicks during the time of =
maximum growth between 5 and 8 days.
