Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Alert. This recording
was made Thursday January 4. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls
at 233-3976.

A Myiarchus flycatcher, thought to be a DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER was found
January 2 in Newport. It was relocated January 3. To reach the area turn
west off Highway 101 in Newport onto 6th. Street. Drive to Nye Street and
park between Nye and Lee Street. Check the yards in the neighborhood. On
the third it was north of 6th. around two sheds and a holly tree.

The PRAIRIE WARBLER is no longer at Eric Horvath's place in Newport and he
is no longer keeping track of it. It was reported January 1 in a flock of
foraging warblers along 35th. Street about 60 yards from Horvath's place.
Also on January 1 a HOUSE WREN was reported from the Nature Trail at the
Marine Science Center; a BLACK PHOEBE was at Nute Slough between Newport
and Toledo; and the RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was nearby at Hidden Valley.

The BRAMBLING continues to be seen at Naselle.

On December 31 a female VERMILION FLYCATCHER was found in the Carty Unit of
Ridgefield NWR north of Vancouver, Washington. It was still there January
3. An immature RED-SHOULDERED HAWK is also in the area. To reach the area
drive to the town of Ridgefield. Turn north (right) at the main
intersection and continue north to the well marked Carty Unit parking lot.
Cross over the footbridge and continue down the slope to the meadows. The
bird is found straight ahead along the fenceline through the meadows. It
seems to favor the trees near the bridge there.

On January 1 a brown GYRFALCON was along the Bayocean Spit at Tillamook
Bay. Many RED PHALAROPES are still in the Tillamook area. A flock of 30
TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS were along the Cascade Head Trail that day. Also on
January 1 was a flock of 16 SNOW BUNTINGS on Clatsop Beach north of the
Sunset Beach Access. A dead LAYSAN ALBATROSS was on the beach there.

A BARRED OWL was found December 29 roosting in a fir tree near the corner
of 36th. and Carlton Streets in southeast Portland. It has been observed
there each day since but could not be relocated January 3.

A WHITE-TAILED KITE was found in Scappoose Bottoms on the Sauvie Island
Christmas Count. It is still in the fields northwest of Dike Road about a
half mile north of its junction with Johnson Landing Road. The Sauvie
Island Count found 118 species. The Portland Count came up with 106 species
including the BARRED OWL.

A gray-brown GYRFALCON was found December 31 near the Railroad Tracks along
Finley Road on the way into Finley NWR. A MOCKINGBIRD is now being seen in
Alto-Baker Park in Eugene. Drive south through the park. The bird was near
some vacant houses at the south end of the park beyond the former gardens.

Fern Ridge Reservoir west of Eugene has been very good lately especially
along Royal Avenue on the east side of the reservoir. The Eugene Count
found 135 species, establishing a new record.

The 127 species recorded on the Medford Count was also a new record. Nine
WHITE-TAILED KITES in one tree, a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, a MOCKINGBIRD, and
some TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS were good finds.

Another record was the 77 species on the Prineville Count. Two SCRUB JAYS,
3 TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS, a WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER, and a LESSER GOLDFINCH
were of interest.

The Baker County Count found a SWAINSON'S HAWK, 40 HEPBURN'S ROSY FINCHES,
and 40 REDPOLLS. Up to 2000 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were in Joseph and four
PURPLE FINCHES were at Enterprise December 31.

Thats it for this week.
