This is the Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society Rare Bird Hotline for
January 12, 1996. For any questions regarding LCBAS call Mike Lilga at

On January 4, Randy Hill (?) of Othello found a Lewis' Woodpecker in an
apple orchard just north of Royal Lake which is about 8 miles west of
Othello. For directions call Randy at 488-9418.

On January 6, Mike Denny found 2 Glaucous Gulls, an adult and a second year
bird, plus a single Yellow-headed Blackbird at the offal piles just north of
the Wallula Pulp Plant.

Also on January 6, Andy Stepniewski of Wapato observed the following birds
along Lower Marion Drain Road in the Toppenish National Wildlife Refuge
during a 1 hour period. He saw 14 Trumpeter Swan, 15 Northern Harriers, 20
Red-tailed Hawks, 8 American Kestrels, 1 Merlin, 1 Prairie Falcon, 1 Great
Horned Owl, and 1 Short-eared Owl.

On January 10, Nancy LaFramboise and Ruth Fischer found a Merlin (bathing)
by the pond at the east end of Columbia Park and a Greater Yellowlegs and a
Common Snipe in the water on the east side of the Clover Island Causeway.
