This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

On January 6, Mike and MerryLynn Denny report an adult and a second-
winter GLAUCOUS GULL at the poop piles below the Iowa Beef slaughter
yards along US 12 in western Walla Walla County, Washington. The piles
are about 3 miles north of Wallula Junction. Washington DeLorme p. 40,
halfway between c- and d-1. Also there was a YELLOW-HEADED
BLACKBIRD in a huge flock of Red-winged and Brewer's Blackbirds, and a
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK.

Jeff Wisman spied a second-winter MEW GULL January 8 in the Spokane
Valley. The bird was with 3 California Gulls and 81 Ring-billeds in the
parking lot of the East Spraque Cinemas.

Two nice flocks of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were in southern Spokane
County today, according to Howard Ferguson. A flock of 200+ was in
the city park in Fairfield and another 100+ flock was in Latah. Both
communities are along Washington 27 and are on Washington DeLorme p.
73, a- and b-7. Howard also saw a SHORT-EARED OWL along Farwell
Road in northwestern Spokane County near the county line on January 9.
The bird was along Farwell between Missile Site Road and Coulee Hite
Road. Washington DeLorme p. 88, b-1.

Tom Besser has been watching a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL north of
Moscow most of this past week. Go about 4 miles north of Moscow on
US 95. At milepost 349.9, turn right (east) onto Lewis Road and follow it
east 0.9 mile to Foothill Road. You should probably check the powerlines
and trees from the Nearing Addition Road all the way to the end of Lewis,
respecting the private property and postings. You may also need to
check south onto Foothill.

Another NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL has been seen by Dave Holick just east
of Robinson Park, about 4 miles northeast of Moscow. To get there, take
Joseph Street east from Mountain View, following the park signs. Stay
left at every chance until you reach the park.

MerryLynn and Mike Denny had 2 first-winter HARRIS' SPARROWS at
Lyons Ferry State Park in southeastern Franklin County, Washington
today, January 12. The birds were on the west side of the road, on the
Franklin County side of the Snake River, about 60' northwest of the big
Lyons Ferry park sign that says "closed." The park is along Washington
261, about 8 miles northwest of Starbuck. Three miles south of the park
they also say a GOLDEN EAGLE. Washington DeLorme p. 55, d-7.

Mike and MerryLynn report an adult COOPER'S HAWK at Mill Creek (aka
Bennington) Lake, just east of Walla Walla on January 11.

And, College Place, Washington was the spot to see a free-flying RINGED
TURTLE DOVE on January 11.
